Photography Backgrounds Muslin

Need help with backdrop?

I’m just setting up my own little studio and the next thing I need to buy is a backdrop. I just want a plain black one for now, or possssibly white. The only decent value ones I can find are muslin. Is this really ok for studio photography? It does seem very see-through but is this effect not noticeable once it’s actually hanging up?

This is probably the best I’ve found so far:

What other materials would you recommend? If there’s one that doesn’t let light through that’d be a bonus. Also, I don’t want to use paper – just fabric.

Its 100% cotton and will crease like no tomorrow. You’d need a steamer too to steam out the creases but be warned, cheaper end fabrics are nasty.

Most people new to studio photography stasrt with cloth then quickly migrate to a paper roll as its more flat and less of a pain in the butt. There’s nothing that says “amateur” like a cloth background full of creases!

If you’re syncing at flash speeds i.e. 1/250th, the natural light won’t show through.
